How do I know if my RV frame is bent or cracked?
Frame damage announces itself through everything bolted to it. Doors that need a lift to latch, a slide-out that seals on one end and gaps on the other, cabinet doors swinging open on level ground, and cracked caulk lines that reopen weeks after they are redone.
On travel trailers and fifth wheels, the classic failure is frame flex just ahead of the axles or at the pin box transition. Manufacturers weld thin gauge C channel and rely on the box structure above for stiffness, so once the sidewall bond fails the steel starts carrying load it was never sized for.
On motorhomes, the outriggers that cantilever the floor out past the chassis rails are the usual crack point, especially under a heavy slide-out room. A hairline crack at the outrigger to rail weld will telegraph as a soft spot in the floor and a slide that no longer seals evenly.
Do you straighten the frame or replace the section?
The decision is made with measurement and metallurgy, not preference. Mild steel rails that are bent inside their elastic and moderately plastic range can be pulled and straightened. Kinked, torn or previously heat damaged steel gets sectioned out and replaced with matched material.
Straightening is done with anchored pulls and measured reference points so the rail returns to spec rather than to something that merely looks straight. We re-measure between pulls because steel springs back, and a rail that reads correct under tension can relax out of tolerance once released.
Sectioning is used where the steel has torn or work hardened. The replacement is fitted with the proper joint geometry, welded, and reinforced with a fish plate sized to the original section modulus so the repair is not stiffer than the surrounding rail, which would simply move the crack.
What happens to the walls once the frame is straight?
Straightening the chassis is only half the job. The wall cage and floor were racked along with it, so the sequence is chassis first, floor plane second, then wall cage and opening squareness, then anything that seals against those openings such as slides, doors and windows.
Openings are checked on the diagonal. A slide-out opening that is out of square by even a quarter inch across the diagonal will bind a Schwintek rail, throw the motors out of sync and chew through gear packs, so the opening is corrected before any mechanism is reinstalled.
Window and door frames get the same treatment. Hehr and Kinro frames are not structural members, and forcing one into a racked opening cracks the flange and starts a leak path, so the opening is brought back to square before the frame goes back in.
