Rivian R1T Electric Pickup Body Repair for Placentia Owners

The R1T is an aluminum-intensive electric pickup with a high-voltage battery pack that carries load as part of the floor structure, and it does not repair like a steel half-ton. Placentia owners bring theirs to our Yorba Linda shop, about ten minutes out, where the aluminum work happens in a segregated area with its own tooling and the high-voltage system is isolated to the OEM procedure before anything comes apart.

What makes the R1T body structure different from a steel pickup?

The R1T uses an aluminum-intensive body structure joined largely with structural adhesive and self-piercing rivets rather than the resistance spot welds a steel truck relies on. That single fact reshapes the tooling, the work area, the sectioning decisions and the corrosion protection plan.

Aluminum is unforgiving of steel contamination. A grinding particle from a steel repair that lands on a bare aluminum panel becomes a galvanic corrosion site, which is why the R1T gets a dedicated aluminum repair area with its own stands, its own abrasives and its own extraction that never sees a steel body.

Joint restoration follows the manufacturer procedure or it is not a restoration. Rivet-bonded seams are drilled out, the mating flanges are cleaned to the specified profile, structural adhesive is applied within its open time, and the correct self-piercing rivet is set at the correct force in the correct sequence.

Aluminum also work-hardens and does not telegraph damage the way steel does, so a bed side or door skin that looks like a simple dent may already be past the point where straightening is honest. We measure and call that out at teardown rather than after the panel cracks in the booth.

How does the high-voltage battery pack change a structural repair on the R1T?

On the R1T the pack sits under the floor and functions as a structural member, tying the frame rails together and contributing to torsional rigidity. That means an underbody or side impact is a battery event as well as a body event, and it has to be treated that way from the first hour.

Before disassembly the technician follows the OEM isolation procedure, pulls the high-voltage disconnect, observes the specified discharge interval and verifies zero volts at the defined test points with a properly rated meter. The disconnect stays out and tagged until the repair is finished and the vehicle is ready to be re-energized.

Then the pack itself gets inspected. Case seam integrity, mounting bolt condition, the underbody shield, coolant line routing and any sign of intrusion get photographed and documented. Quad-motor and dual-motor layouts place drive units and cabling differently, so the inspection path is set by the actual configuration in front of us.

Torque specification and hardware replacement rules for pack mounting are not negotiable. Any fastener the manufacturer calls single-use gets replaced, and the pack is re-secured to the published sequence and value rather than pulled down by feel.

What features and sensors need attention after R1T panel or glass work?

The R1T carries hardware that a conventional pickup simply does not have: a powered tonneau, the gear tunnel with its own doors and seals, a powered charge port door, air suspension with height sensors, and a camera and radar suite that feeds driver assistance. All of it interacts with body repair.

The gear tunnel and its doors sit right where side and rear damage lands. Door alignment, hinge condition, seal seating and drainage all have to be checked after a side hit, because a tunnel that leaks or a door that binds is the complaint you hear about three weeks after delivery, not at pickup.

The powered tonneau runs in tracks along the bed rails, so any bed side repair means verifying the track alignment and the tonneau travel through its full range before the vehicle leaves. The same applies to the charge port door, which is easy to overlook after a front quarter repair.

Windshield replacement, bumper or fender work and any suspension change put the driver assistance calibration back on the table. We set and verify ride height first, because the camera aim reference is wrong if the air suspension is out, then run and document each required calibration with a closing post-repair scan.

Questions we get asked

Can you repair an R1T aluminum bed side or does it have to be replaced?
It depends on the strain in the panel and where the damage sits relative to a bonded or riveted seam. Aluminum work-hardens as it deforms, so a panel that looks straightenable can be past its useful limit. We measure at teardown and give you the honest call, with photographs, before the estimate goes to the carrier for approval.
Does the high-voltage battery pack have to come out for structural work?
Not always, but the decision is driven by the OEM procedure for the specific repair, not by convenience. Because the pack is a structural member under the floor, some underbody and rocker repairs require removal for access and for correct fastener replacement. When removal is required we document the reason and the reinstallation torque sequence in the repair file.
Why does aluminum work need a separate area from the rest of the shop?
Steel dust that settles on bare aluminum starts galvanic corrosion, which surfaces later as blistering paint and pitting under an otherwise perfect finish. Keeping the aluminum repair area, tooling, abrasives and extraction fully separate is the only reliable way to prevent it. It is standard practice on aluminum-intensive vehicles and we treat it as non-negotiable.
Do you calibrate the driver assistance system after a windshield or bumper repair?
Yes, and we document it. Windshield replacement, front bumper and grille work, mirror replacement and suspension changes all sit on the calibration list per the OEM position statement. On an air-suspended R1T we set and verify ride height first, then perform the calibration, then close with a post-repair scan showing the codes cleared and confirmed.
