Class B Camper Van Body and Roof Repair for Placentia Owners
A Class B camper van is a van first and an RV second, so it fails like a van: sliding door track and roller wear, sheet metal panel damage, and a fiberglass high roof that cracks at the bonded seam. What breaks on a Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster camper van?
The chassis is a commercial van, so the failure list starts with commercial van problems and then adds the conversion. Sliding door tracks wear, rockers and lower panels take curb and parking damage, and the rear doors get bent by loaded carriers that no factory engineer ever accounted for.
Sliding door track and roller wear is the single most common Sprinter complaint we see. The center track roller arm elongates its hole, the door drops, and then it drags on the striker and refuses to seal. Replacing the roller assembly without checking the track and the hinge bracket just repeats the problem in six months.
Body panel work on a van is unibody work. There is no separate frame to absorb a hit, so a rear quarter or a B-pillar strike has to be pulled and measured, not just filled. We straighten on the frame rack, replace panels at factory seams where the manufacturer intended, and refinish with a blend into the adjacent panels.
Rear carriers and Aluminess racks concentrate load into a few mounting points on a door or a rear frame section. When a loaded bike rack goes over a speed bump wrong, the damage shows up as a cracked mount weld or a distorted door skin. We repair the mount and reinforce it rather than just bolting the rack back to a bent panel.
How do you repair a cracked high-roof fiberglass top or a pop-top?
A fiberglass high roof is bonded and fastened to the cut edge of the van roof, and that joint is the weak point. Cracks radiate from the seam, from the corners of the roof opening, and from any strike point where the top hit a parking structure beam or a low branch on a fire road.
Low-clearance roof strikes are common enough that we plan for them. The impact usually looks minor on the surface but pushes the top off its bond line, which opens a leak path along a foot or more of seam. We grind the crack out to sound laminate, lay glass from both sides where access allows, and rebed the top to the roof edge.
Pop-top mechanisms have their own failure list: gas struts that no longer hold, scissor arms that bind after a strike, torn or delaminated tent fabric, and latches that no longer pull the top down flat against its seal. We service the mechanism as a unit because a top that closes crooked will leak no matter how good the seal is.
After any roof or top repair the van gets water tested. On a Class B the water path runs straight into the headliner, the upper cabinets and often the lithium battery compartment, so we are not interested in finding out about a missed leak after a Placentia owner has driven it home.
Do you handle the wet bath and lithium electrical side of a Class B?
Yes. A compact camper van packs a wet bath, a water system, a lithium bank, an inverter and a solar controller into a space smaller than a walk-in closet, and body damage or a roof leak usually takes at least one of those systems with it.
Water intrusion from a roof seam or a strike commonly lands on the electrical shelf, because that is where builders put the Victron or Xantrex inverter and the battery bank. We check for corrosion at the terminals and the busbars, not just for a system that still powers up, since a corroded lug will fail under load months later.
Wet baths in a Class B are molded one-piece or panel assemblies with a very small tolerance for a racked opening. If the van body has been pulled straight after a collision, the bath door and the shower pan flange both need to be checked and rebedded, or the pan will leak into the subfloor.
Mechanical and Electrical work bills at $260 per hour and diagnostics at $285 with a one hour minimum applied as a credit. The RV systems estimate is $150, also applied as a credit. All of it happens in-shop in Yorba Linda, a short drive from Placentia.
