Fire Apparatus Body Repair for Placentia Area Departments

What makes apparatus body repair different from truck body repair?
An apparatus body is a welded aluminum structure carrying compartments, a hose bed, a ladder rack, a pump and its plumbing, and in many cases an aerial device. It is not a bolt-on box. Cutting into it means understanding what load path you just interrupted and what system runs behind the panel.
Most apparatus bodies are welded aluminum extrusion and sheet. Repairing them requires aluminum welding with the correct filler alloy and heat control, because overheating a structural extrusion softens it in the heat affected zone and you have traded a dent for a weak spot. We repair to the body builder's construction, not to a generic aluminum procedure.
Pump panel plumbing sits immediately behind body panels on a pumper, and discharge piping, valve bodies and control linkages have very little clearance. Before we cut or pull a panel, we open the pump enclosure and confirm what is behind it. Nicking a discharge line during body work turns a two week job into a much larger one.
Weight and center of gravity are a real constraint. Apparatus are engineered close to their axle ratings, and adding heavy reinforcement or thick filler to a repair area changes both. We repair with material comparable to what was there, and we do not build up mass to avoid a proper structural fix.
Can you repair roll-up compartment doors and equipment mounting?
Roll-up compartment doors are the most frequently damaged part of any engine. They get backed into, they get run with equipment protruding, and the tracks bend where the door curves into the header. A door that binds is a compartment nobody can open on scene.
We repair and replace roll-up door slats, side tracks, header curves, latches and counterbalance assemblies. The critical part is getting the compartment opening square first. A door installed into a racked opening will bind again within weeks, so opening geometry gets corrected before the new door goes in.
Hose beds and ladder racks are structural mounting points, and body damage near them changes how they load. We verify hose bed divider mounting, ladder rack rail alignment and hydraulic or manual rack travel after any repair in that area, so a crew is not fighting a rack that no longer swings clean.
On apparatus with an aerial device, clearance is checked through the full range of motion before the unit leaves. A repaired body panel that sits three eighths of an inch proud is not a problem at rest and is a very expensive problem at full rotation.
How do you handle warning lights and apparatus paint?
Warning lighting and reflective striping are the two most visible parts of an apparatus refinish, and they are the parts most likely to be done poorly. Both have to go back exactly where they were, sealed correctly, and functioning as a complete system rather than as individual fixtures.
We replace Whelen and Federal Signal warning lights and light bars, reseal every body penetration, and function test the full warning system including flash pattern and load management. A light that works on the bench and fails in the rain is a penetration that was not sealed properly during reassembly.
Apparatus paint is done in our booth with color matched to the existing body, including the departmental scheme where a two-tone or accent color is involved. Reflective striping and chevron work are reapplied to the original layout, and departmental lettering, unit numbers and seals go back on to match the rest of the fleet.
