What causes intermittent twelve volt problems in an RV?
Grounds and connections, far more often than components. An RV chassis carries dozens of ground points that vibrate, corrode in coastal air and loosen over years, and a marginal ground produces exactly the symptoms owners describe as random: lights dimming, a pump cycling oddly, a slide that hesitates.
We test under load rather than at rest. A ground that reads fine with a meter across it will drop half a volt when a slide motor pulls thirty amps through it, and that drop is what the control board sees as a fault condition and reports as something else entirely.
Battery condition masks the rest. A bank that will not hold surface charge makes every other twelve volt symptom worse, so a load test on the batteries comes before chasing a fault that may simply be a bank that has lost half its capacity.
How do I know if my inverter or converter has failed?
A converter that has failed stops charging the batteries from shore power, so the bank slowly drops even while plugged in. A failed inverter stops producing alternating current from the batteries, so outlets go dead the moment shore power and the generator are both off.
Magnum units commonly report a fault code at the remote panel, which narrows the search quickly. Xantrex and Victron units log differently, and Victron systems in particular can be interrogated for historical data that shows exactly when and how the fault developed.
Before condemning any of them we verify input voltage, output voltage and the transfer function separately. An inverter blamed for dead outlets frequently turns out to be a tripped internal breaker, a failed transfer relay or a shore power cord that has burned a blade.
Can you add solar and lithium to my coach?
Yes, and the design work matters more than the panels. A useful system is sized around your actual daily consumption, the roof area left after air conditioners and vents, the charge controller type, and whether the existing converter and inverter can handle a lithium bank at all.
Dropping lithium batteries into a coach built for lead acid without addressing the converter charge profile is the most common upgrade mistake. Many older converters never reach the voltage lithium needs, so the owner pays for capacity that never fully charges.
Wire sizing and overcurrent protection get calculated rather than guessed. A large inverter pulling from a battery bank moves serious current, and undersized cable in a wall cavity is the kind of shortcut that turns an upgrade into a fire investigation.
