Box Truck Body, Roll-Up Door and Lift Gate Repair Near Placentia

Box trucks live at loading docks, and docks are where they get destroyed. OCRV Center repairs box bodies for Placentia fleets at our Yorba Linda facility, handling Whiting and Todco roll-up door panels and tracks, Maxon, Tommy Gate and Waltco lift gates, torn corner posts, crushed rear frames and FRP or aluminum sidewall panel replacement, all documented for your carrier.

Why does dock damage cost more than it looks like it should?

A slow backing impact into a dock bumper looks like a scuffed rear frame. The load path actually runs up the corner posts and across the header, and if the rear opening has gone out of square the roll-up door will never track properly again until the opening is corrected.

Corner posts are the structural corners of the box, tying the sidewall, floor and roof together. A torn or buckled post lets the rear opening rack, which is why a truck that took a dock hit six months ago now has a door that binds two thirds of the way up and a rear frame that leaks.

The rear frame and header are extruded or fabricated sections that carry the door track and the gate mounting. Straightening them back to square is the first step of any rear-end repair. We measure the opening diagonals rather than eyeballing it, because a door track has very little tolerance for a racked opening.

Once the opening is square we address the door itself. Individual roll-up panels can be replaced on Whiting and Todco doors, along with hinges, rollers, track sections, cables and the counterbalance spring. Replacing a bent panel without correcting the track just transfers the binding to the next panel up.

What does sidewall, roof and lift gate repair involve on a box body?

Box bodies from builders like Morgan and Supreme use either FRP panels or a sheet-and-post aluminum construction. The repair approach is completely different between the two, and using the wrong method leaves a wall that flexes and leaks.

On sheet-and-post aluminum bodies, individual skin panels can be removed and replaced between posts, and bent posts can be replaced individually. On FRP bodies the panel is bonded and structural, so a puncture repair has to restore the laminate rather than just cover the hole with a patch that will delaminate at the edges.

Roof damage from a low clearance strike almost always involves bent roof bows in addition to the skin or translucent roof panel. Replacing the panel without straightening or replacing the bows leaves a low spot that ponds water and leaks at the next seam. Translucent panels are replaced with correct material so the cargo area keeps its light.

Lift gates take direct impact at the platform and at the mounting. We repair and rebuild Maxon, Tommy Gate and Waltco gates: bent platforms, damaged hinges and pins, hydraulic lines and cylinders, and cracked mounting plates where the gate ties into the box and frame. Box-to-frame mounting is inspected while the gate is off.

Questions we get asked

Our roll-up door binds halfway. Is that a door problem or a body problem?
Usually a body problem. A door that binds at a consistent point almost always means the rear opening has gone out of square, typically from a dock strike that damaged a corner post. Replacing door panels without correcting the opening buys a few weeks. We measure the opening diagonals first and correct the structure, then refit the door.
Can a punctured FRP sidewall be patched or does the panel come off?
It depends on size and location. A small puncture away from a post or a seam can be repaired by restoring the laminate properly from both sides. A large tear, damage crossing a joint, or delamination spreading from the edges means panel replacement, because a surface patch over a compromised laminate will lift and leak again.
Do you repair lift gates or only the box body?
We repair both. Maxon, Tommy Gate and Waltco gates come in with bent platforms, damaged hinges and pins, leaking cylinders, and cracked mounting plates where the gate ties into the box and chassis. We inspect the box-to-frame mounting at the same time, since a gate impact loads that mounting hard.
How quickly can you turn a box truck around for a Placentia fleet?
Straightforward door and panel work is often three to six shop days once parts are staged. Rear frame and corner post structural work runs longer. We order door panels, track sections and gate components before the truck comes off the route so downtime starts when work starts at our Yorba Linda shop.
