Why does an RV have two separate electrical systems?
Because a coach has to run both parked and unplugged. The twelve volt direct current side runs lights, pumps, slides, jacks and control boards from the battery bank. The one hundred twenty volt alternating current side runs air conditioning, the microwave and outlets from shore power, the generator or an inverter.
The converter charges the batteries from shore power, and the inverter does the opposite, producing alternating current from the battery bank. Magnum, Xantrex and Victron units are common, and a failure in either direction produces symptoms owners usually blame on the batteries first.
Most confusing faults live at the boundary. A transfer switch that has arced, a loose neutral in the distribution panel or a failed converter will produce behavior that looks random until someone puts a meter on it and reads actual voltage under actual load.
Why is there a charge for diagnostics?
Because finding an intermittent fault in a coach with hundreds of feet of wiring, multiple ground points and several control boards is skilled instrumented work, not a glance. The $285 hourly diagnostic charge carries a one hour minimum and is applied as a credit against the repair you authorize.
The alternative approach, replacing likely parts until the symptom stops, is more expensive for the owner and less reliable. A measured diagnosis identifies the actual failed component, which frequently turns out to be a corroded ground or a chafed conductor rather than the board everyone suspected.
Diagnostic time also produces documentation. Readings, load tests and the isolation sequence go into the file, which matters if the fault is intermittent and the coach comes back, and it matters for insurance claims where an electrical fault caused secondary damage.
