Shuttle Bus and Cutaway Body Repair Near Placentia, CA
Hotel, campus and paratransit shuttles are a bus body bolted to a cutaway chassis, and the two do not always move together. Placentia operators bring us cracked body-to-chassis mounting rails, roof strikes from parking structure clearance bars, Braun and Ricon lift damage and entry door operator problems. Everything is repaired in-shop in Yorba Linda, including livery paint and graphics.
Why do cutaway shuttle bodies crack at the mounting rails?
A cutaway shuttle is a purpose-built bus body bolted onto a Ford or Chevy cutaway chassis through longitudinal mounting rails. The chassis frame flexes in torsion. The body shell is comparatively rigid. Every driveway apron and speed bump works that difference, and the mounting rails absorb it.
Cracks show up first at the forward mounting brackets just behind the cab bulkhead, where torsional input is highest. Left alone, the crack propagates into the rail web and the body starts to move independently of the chassis, which shows up as door misalignment, interior trim gaps and squeaks over bumps.
The repair is to remove interior trim and flooring at the affected bays, expose the rail and bracket, cut out the cracked section, and weld in new material with a gusset that spreads load rather than concentrating it at a new stress riser. Simply welding the crack closed puts it back within a few thousand miles.
We also check body-to-cab sealing at the same time. A shuttle body that has been moving on its mounts almost always has a compromised seal at the cab transition, which is where water gets in and rots the floor structure behind the driver.
Can you repair Braun and Ricon wheelchair lifts and door operators?
Yes, and on a paratransit or campus shuttle these are the two systems that determine whether the vehicle can run its route at all. A lift that will not cycle or a door that will not close on command takes the unit out of service regardless of how good the paint looks.
Braun and Ricon lifts are mounted into the body structure at the side door opening, and side impact damage distorts that opening enough that the lift binds through its cycle. We square the opening, verify the lift platform deploys level, check the interlock circuits, and confirm the barrier and handrail function before the shuttle goes back out.
Entry door operators fail two ways: mechanical binding from a distorted door frame, and operator or linkage damage from someone forcing a door that was already binding. We repair the frame first, because replacing an operator on a bent opening just breaks the new operator.
Passenger window frames get checked at the same time. Shuttle side windows are set in frames that distort with the body, and a frame that no longer holds the seal is a leak that shows up as a stained interior panel months later.
What happens after a parking structure roof strike?
Low-clearance strikes are the single most common shuttle damage we see, because a shuttle body sits taller than the chassis it is built on and drivers judge clearance from the cab. Hotel porte-cocheres, parking structure clearance bars and drive-through canopies all take their toll.
A roof strike does more than dent the roof cap. It shears roof bow to sidewall connections, opens the roof-to-sidewall seam, and frequently damages the roof air conditioning shroud and the emergency roof hatch frame. We open the seam, repair or replace roof bows, and reseal the termination properly rather than running a bead of sealant over a moving joint.
Roof mounted equipment gets removed and reinstalled rather than worked around. Air conditioning shrouds, hatches and antenna mounts all have their own sealing requirements, and reinstalling them onto a repaired roof is a different job than sealing around them in place.
Hotel, resort and campus liveries are reapplied to match. Placentia area operators run distinctive graphics packages, and we color match the base, apply the livery, and clear where the graphics scheme calls for it so the repaired panel is indistinguishable from the rest of the fleet.
