Street Sweeper Body and Hopper Repair Serving Placentia

What fails first on a sweeper hopper and dump assembly?

The hopper is a wet, heavy, abrasive box that gets raised and dumped several times a shift. The combination of load, moisture and repeated articulation makes the dump hinge and the hopper floor the two places that fail first on almost every sweeper we see.

Dump hinge bosses wear oval and the hinge pins knock. Once that happens, the hopper no longer lifts square, one side leads, and the resulting twist works the hopper body shell and the lift cylinder mounts. We bore, sleeve and reweld the bosses and replace pins rather than oversizing a pin into a worn hole.

Hopper floors and lower sidewalls corrode from the inside because they are wet with abrasive debris for most of the working day. We cut out corroded sections, replace with plate matched to the wear environment, and weld continuous seams so water does not sit in a stitch weld gap and start the cycle over.

Lift cylinder mounts and the hopper-to-chassis mounting get checked at the same time. A hopper that has been lifting out of square for months has been putting off-axis load into those mounts, and cracks there are common on higher hour units.

Can you repair broom assemblies, water systems and suction components?

The working end of a sweeper is a collection of arms, linkages, hoses and spray lines mounted low and forward where they take curb contact. These systems are what make the vehicle a sweeper rather than a truck, and they are usually what has actually failed when a unit comes in.

Gutter broom arms and main broom mounting take direct curb strikes. Bent arms, cracked mounting brackets and worn pivot bushings all change broom contact pattern, which is why an operator reports the unit is no longer sweeping clean. We straighten, replace cracked sections, and reinforce mounting where the design keeps failing in the same spot.

Water tanks, spray bars and the plumbing between them corrode and chafe. Spray line routing that rubs on a frame member will wear through, and a nozzle that has been fed by a partially blocked line for months will have caused dust complaints on the route. We repair tank mounts, reroute and secure lines, and correct corroded fittings.

On regenerative air units, the suction hose, blast orifice and conveyor components wear from the inside out. We replace hose sections, repair conveyor structure and mounting, and check the pickup head geometry, because a pickup head sitting at the wrong angle sweeps poorly no matter what condition the brooms are in.

Why do sweepers corrode faster than the rest of the fleet?

Because they operate wet all day, every day, at low speed, close to the curb, spraying water forward and down. Nothing on the vehicle ever fully dries during a shift, and the debris the vehicle is picking up is exactly the abrasive, salt-carrying material that accelerates corrosion.

Chassis corrosion on a sweeper is concentrated at frame crossmembers, tank straps, air and hydraulic line clamps and any bracket that traps water. We cut back to sound metal, replace brackets, and coat with a system chosen for continuous wet exposure rather than a general fleet primer.

Dual steer cabs add their own damage set. A right hand station used for curb work means the right side of the cab, mirror, glass and door see far more contact and wear than the left, and the second control station itself is subject to damage that a single station truck never sees.

Low-speed impact is chronic rather than dramatic. A sweeper accumulates dozens of small curb, bollard and parked-car contacts over a service life, and it usually arrives here with two or three of them layered on top of each other. We document the whole picture rather than repairing only the newest dent.

Questions we get asked

The hopper lifts crooked. What causes that?
Almost always worn dump hinge bosses and pins, sometimes combined with a lift cylinder mount that has cracked or shifted. Once the hinge geometry is off, one side leads the lift and the hopper body twists on every dump, which then cracks the shell and the cylinder mounts. We correct the hinge geometry first.
Our sweeper is not picking up clean anymore. Is that a broom problem?
It can be broom wear, but on units we see the cause is often bent gutter broom arms, worn pivot bushings or a pickup head sitting at the wrong angle after curb contact. All of those change the contact pattern. We check arm geometry and head angle against spec before recommending anything be replaced.
Can you address chassis corrosion at the same time as the body?
Yes, and we recommend it. Sweeper chassis corrode at crossmembers, tank straps and line clamps because the vehicle never dries out during a shift. Doing body work on a unit with a wasted crossmember just means the truck comes back sooner. We document everything we find and let your fleet manager decide the scope.
How long does a hopper rebuild take?
A hinge boss rebuild with pins and a partial floor section is typically five to eight shop days. A full hopper floor and lower sidewall replacement with hinge, cylinder mount and corrosion work runs three to four weeks. Scheduling it around your route rotation keeps coverage intact while the unit is here.
