Medium Duty Commercial Truck Body Repair for Placentia Fleets

Medium duty work trucks in Class 4 through Class 7 take a specific kind of abuse: curb strikes, dock rash, and slow corrosion at the cab corners. OCRV Center repairs them in-shop in Yorba Linda, about ten minutes from Placentia, with fiberglass panel work, structural cab repair, frame rail straightening and DOT compliance items handled together so the truck leaves ready to run its route.

Where do medium duty work trucks actually fail?

A Class 6 chassis cab that spends its life in stop and go Orange County traffic does not fail like a highway tractor. The damage concentrates at the corners, the lower cab structure, and anywhere water can sit behind a seam or a bolted-on body.

Fiberglass hoods and fenders crack rather than dent. A tilt hood that has been dropped or twisted develops stress cracks radiating from the hinge and latch points, and those cracks propagate every time the hood is opened. We grind back, lay in glass, and refinish rather than filling a crack that is still moving.

Cab corners and rocker panels rot from the inside. Water gets past the door seal or the cab mount and sits in the lower structure. By the time it shows through paint, the sound metal is often two or three inches above what you can see. We cut to clean steel, butt weld replacement sections, and seal both sides.

Frame rails on medium duty trucks bend more often than owners expect, usually from a curb strike or from a body that was mounted without proper spacers and has been working the rail for years. Straightening is done on measured equipment, and we inspect the crossmembers and body mounting brackets while the truck is on the rack.

How do you handle DOT items and keep the truck earning?

Most Placentia fleets calling us about a medium duty truck are not calling about aesthetics. They are calling because the truck failed an inspection or because a driver put it into a dock and the rear is unsafe. We prioritize accordingly.

DOT lighting, reflective conspicuity tape, mirrors, mud flaps and step integrity are all inspection items. We replace damaged lamps and harness sections rather than splicing marginal repairs, and we reapply conspicuity tape to spec on the rear and along the sides where the body requires it.

Air brake equipped medium duty trucks get their Bendix components inspected where the damage is anywhere near the air system. A chafed or crimped air line behind a damaged fender is an out-of-service item and is far cheaper to correct while the panel is already off.

Scheduling is built backwards from your route calendar. We order the fiberglass hood, the cab corner sections and the lighting before the truck leaves service, so the downtime clock starts when the wrenches start, not when the parts truck arrives.

How the work runs, step by step

  1. 1

    Route-aware intake

We review your route schedule and the damage together, then set a drop-off date that lines up with parts arriving rather than parking the truck early.

    Same day

  2. 2

    Structural and corrosion repair

Cab corners and rockers are cut back to sound metal, frame rails are straightened on measured equipment, and fiberglass panels are repaired or replaced.

    2 to 7 shop days

  3. 3

    Compliance and refinish release

Lighting, conspicuity tape, mirrors and flaps are brought to compliant condition, paint is matched and sprayed, and the photo file is completed.

    2 to 4 shop days

Questions we get asked

Can you replace a cracked fiberglass hood on a medium duty truck?
Yes. We repair cracked fiberglass hoods and fenders with proper glass layup and refinish, and we replace them outright when the cracking runs through the hinge or latch mounting points. A hood that flexes at the hinge will crack again no matter how well the surface is filled, so we assess the mount first.
Is cab corner rust worth repairing or should we just run the truck?
It depends on how far it has gone. Surface bubbling at the corner is a straightforward cut and weld job. If water has reached the cab mount or the lower door structure, the repair is larger and the truck may eventually have a structural problem. We will open it, photograph it, and give you an honest scope before committing.
Do you correct DOT items while the truck is in for body work?
Yes, and we recommend it. Damaged lighting, torn conspicuity tape, broken mirrors and compromised air lines are inspection items that will park the truck later. Doing them while the panel is already off costs a fraction of a separate visit and keeps the unit out of an out-of-service situation on the road.
