Dump Truck Body, Hoist and Subframe Repair for Placentia Contractors

Where does a dump body actually crack first?
The load path on a raised dump body concentrates at a few points: the hoist lower mount, the rear hinge pins, and the subframe rails where they tie into the chassis. Those are the places to look before chasing a crack you can already see.
Subframe cracking typically starts at the transition where the subframe rail changes section or where a crossmember ties in. A crack there is a fatigue crack, which means welding it closed without adding a doubler or correcting the stress riser simply moves the crack an inch. We grind the crack out fully, weld in correct material, and reinforce the transition.
The hoist lower mount and the trunnion take the entire lifting load in compression and the entire dumping load in shear. Elongated pin bores, cracked mounting plates and a bent cylinder rod are all common. A cylinder that has been side loaded because the body twisted will keep failing until the body and subframe are brought back square.
Rear hinge pins wear oval, and worn pins let the body settle unevenly, which twists the whole assembly on every dump cycle. Replacing pins and bushings is inexpensive; letting them run until the hinge ears tear is not. We inspect them any time the truck is in for body work.
How do you handle worn floors and body-up overhead strikes?
Two things wreck dump bodies: what you haul, and raising the body under something. Abrasive material grinds the floor and lower sidewalls thin, and a raised body meeting a power line, a canopy or a bridge does spectacular structural damage in a fraction of a second.
Floor and lower sidewall wear plate is replaced in hard steel or abrasion resistant plate matched to what the truck actually hauls. Asphalt, rock and demolition debris all wear differently. We cut out thinned plate, fit new material, and weld it with correct preheat and procedure so the new plate does not crack at the weld under the first load.
Overhead strikes with the body raised bend the upper sidewalls, tear the front wall, twist the body relative to the subframe and frequently damage the hoist. Straightening a twisted body is structural work and has to happen before anyone talks about paint, because a twisted body will not seat, will not seal at the tailgate, and will side load the hoist.
Tailgate latches and pivots take a beating from material impact and from being slammed on every cycle. Bent latch bars, worn pivot pins, torn hinge ears and damaged air or cable release hardware all get repaired, since a tailgate that does not latch reliably is both a spill hazard and a road hazard.
Cab shields protect the cab from material coming forward and are frequently bent by overloading or an overhead strike. Tarp systems get straightened, rerolled and refit. Placentia contractors get a documented photo file for the carrier on any impact claim.

Subframe cracks are ground out and rewelded with reinforcement, hoist and hinge hardware is rebuilt, and body twist is corrected before any panel work.

Worn floor and sidewall plate is replaced in matched material, tailgate hardware is refit, and the body is coated for the service it actually sees.
