Incident Command Vehicle Repair for Placentia Agencies
An incident command vehicle carries a mast, a rack room and a slide-out on a body that has to stay watertight through all of it. OCRV Center repairs command and communications vehicles in-shop at our Yorba Linda facility, about ten minutes from Placentia: mast mounting reinforcement, antenna and cable penetrations, rack anchoring, slide-out rooms, generators and agency livery.
What does a telescoping mast do to the body over time?
It concentrates a long lever into a small mounting footprint. Wind load at the head of an extended mast reacts through the base and the guy structure into the body, and any mounting that was marginal at build time will show fatigue at the welds and the surrounding roof and wall structure.
We repair and reinforce mast mounting, tying the base into the body structure so the reaction spreads through frame members instead of concentrating at a plate. Cracks at the base plate corners, deformed roof deck around the mount, and elongated fastener holes are all signs the mount has been carrying more than it was designed to.
Antenna and cable penetrations have to stay watertight, and on a command vehicle roof there are a lot of them in a small area. We replace failed boots and glands, reflash the openings, repair the substrate underneath where water has already tracked in, and reseal with the right system rather than a general purpose caulk that will not survive UV and mast cycling.
Every penetration we open gets documented with photos before and after, both for the repair record and for the carrier. Placentia and north Orange County agencies typically need that record for their own asset files as well.
How do you handle the electronics and rack room during a repair?
Extensive electronics handling during disassembly is the defining feature of this work. Racks are heavy, cabling is labeled inconsistently, and a radio or dispatch console that comes back miswired is worse than one that never left, so we photograph and tag before anything is unplugged.
Equipment rack anchoring gets inspected as a structural item. A loaded rack is a large mass on a small footprint, and after any impact the anchors, the floor structure beneath them and the rack frame itself all need checking. We repair the floor structure and reanchor into it, rather than reusing anchor holes that have already worked loose.
The conference area interior, seating, table structure and slide-out room get repaired together. A slide-out on a command vehicle sees fewer cycles than an RV slide but takes the same seal and rail issues, and a room that will not seal turns a deployment vehicle into a leak that ruins electronics.
Generator and shore power work covers mounting, damaged runs, transfer arrangements and terminations loosened by vibration. We verify power under load before the vehicle leaves, because a command vehicle that cannot hold its own power is not deployable regardless of how good the body looks.
Can you restore agency livery and reflective markings correctly?
Yes, and it matters for both identity and visibility. Agency livery, striping and reflective markings are specified by the agency, and a repair that returns the vehicle with approximate graphics or the wrong reflective material fails at the only moment it counts, which is at night on a scene.
We document the existing livery layout with measured photos before removal, refinish panels with matched and blended color, then reinstall striping, lettering, agency seals and reflective conspicuity markings to the original layout and material specification. Where the agency has updated its scheme we work to the supplied artwork instead.
Light bar and warning light mounting, including Whelen and Federal Signal installations, gets checked and resealed at the same time, since roof work almost always touches the same fastener zones and a light bar mount left half sealed becomes the next leak.
