Super C Motorhome Repair on Freightliner and Kenworth Chassis

A Super C looks like a big Class C and repairs like a medium-duty truck. Under the house body sits a Freightliner M2 or a Kenworth chassis with air brakes, a heavy front axle and a cooling stack built for towing. What makes a Super C different from a standard Class C repair?

Weight, chassis and brakes. A Super C can run 26,000 to 33,000 pounds gross where a conventional Class C sits closer to 14,500. That changes the frame, the axles, the brake system and the way the house body has to be attached, and it changes who is qualified to touch it.

The Freightliner M2 and Kenworth chassis under a Super C use air brakes with an ABS system, air suspension at the rear on many builds, and a frame rated for far more section modulus than an E-450. Repair procedures follow medium-duty truck practice, including proper frame repair methods rather than heat and pull shortcuts.

The house body is still an RV body: laminated sidewalls, a fiberglass cap, slides, a roof membrane and all the same water intrusion paths. What differs is that it is mounted to a much stiffer frame, so when the coach takes a hit the body does not absorb it the way a lighter chassis would. Damage transfers further into the structure.

That combination is why a Super C needs a shop with both capabilities. Our 35,000 sq ft facility runs full-height RV bays, frame and chassis equipment and a paint booth, so for a Placentia owner the truck side and the house side of the repair happen in the same building rather than across two vendors and two schedules.

How do you handle front-end damage to the radiator and charge air cooler?

A Super C carries a large cooling stack forward of the engine: radiator, charge air cooler, condenser and often a transmission cooler, all sandwiched together. Even a moderate front-end impact pushes the bumper and grille back far enough to bend fins, crack end tanks or split a charge air cooler weld.

The charge air cooler is the part owners miss. A small crack in a CAC end tank or a leaking boot clamp does not spill fluid, so nothing looks wrong in the lot. What you get instead is a boost leak, reduced power on a grade and eventually a check engine light for turbo underboost. We pressure test the charge air side after any front-end hit.

Radiator damage on a medium-duty chassis is not a swap-and-go item. The shroud, the fan clearance and the mounting isolators all have to end up where they started or the fan will contact the shroud under load. We measure the core support and correct it before the new cooling package goes in.

Everything forward of the firewall gets checked for square, including the steer axle geometry, because a hit hard enough to reach the cooling stack has already loaded the frame horns. Mechanical and Electrical work bills at $260 per hour with diagnostics at $285 and a one hour minimum applied as a credit.

Can you do frame extension and weight distribution work on a Super C?

Yes, and it comes up more than people expect. Super C coaches are often built on a chassis that was extended or modified at the coach builder, and those modifications age. Splice plates loosen, crossmembers crack, and the rear overhang sags on a coach that has spent years loaded to the axle limit.

Frame extension repair on a medium-duty chassis follows manufacturer practice: correct splice length, correct fastener pattern, no welding across a flange, and reinforcement sized to the section it is joining. We do not shortcut it, because the section behind the extension carries the entire rear house body and often a hitch rated for a trailer.

Weight distribution is the other half of the conversation. A Super C that squats, wanders or eats rear tires is usually loaded wrong or riding on tired air springs and shocks. Firestone and Air Lift air springs, Koni or Bilstein shocks and a Safe-T-Plus stabilizer are all things we fit, but only after we know what the coach actually weighs on each corner.

Air brake and ABS work is part of the same package. Slack adjusters, chambers, air dryers and ABS sensors are routine service items on a medium-duty chassis, and they are usually overdue on a coach that only sees a few thousand miles a year. We inspect the whole air system whenever a Super C is in for chassis work.

Is a Super C repaired like an RV or like a truck?
Both, and that is exactly the problem with taking it to a shop that only does one. The chassis, brakes, cooling and frame follow medium-duty truck practice on a Freightliner M2 or Kenworth. The body above it is a laminated RV house with slides, a fiberglass cap and a membrane roof. We run both capabilities in the same 35,000 sq ft building in Yorba Linda.
After a front-end hit, why do you pressure test the charge air cooler?
Because a cracked charge air cooler does not leak anything you can see. It leaks boost. The symptom shows up later as sluggish performance pulling a grade, elevated exhaust temperature and eventually a turbo underboost code. Pressure testing the charge air side after an impact takes an hour and prevents an owner from driving away with damage nobody documented on the claim.
My Super C squats in the rear and wanders on the freeway. Where do you start?
With actual corner weights, not with parts. A very large share of handling complaints on heavy coaches are loading problems compounded by tired air springs and shocks. Once we know what each corner weighs we can tell you whether the fix is redistributing cargo, replacing air springs and shocks, adding a steering stabilizer, or some combination of all three.
