Why does the rear of an extended van take the most damage?

Because the driver is steering the front and the tail is doing something else. On a long overhang the rear corner swings wide on a tight turn, so bollards, dock bumpers, fence posts and column corners land on the rear quarter and the bumper before anyone in the cab knows contact happened.

The usual result is a crushed rear corner, a bent bumper and rear crossmember, and a rear body opening that has been pushed out of square. On a long body the deformation does not stay local, and we regularly find the rear quarter has been pulled forward enough to change the gap at the rear side door.

Repair starts with the rear crossmember and the rails behind the axle. Straightening the sheet metal before the structure underneath is corrected produces a panel that looks right in the bay and moves again the first time the van is loaded. Structure first, then skin, then paint, in that order.

What changes about panel work on a longer body?

Length changes everything about how a repair reads. An extended van side is a very long, very flat surface, and every deviation in that surface shows as a running highlight down the whole vehicle rather than a small localized flaw the way it would on a short van.

Panel replacement geometry gets more demanding too. A side panel or a rear quarter on an extended body is a large stamping that has to align at the roof drip, the rocker, the door openings and the rear corner all at once, so we fit and check the panel dry before anything is welded or bonded permanently.

Refinish planning matters just as much. Blending across an eight or nine foot flat side takes a properly measured variant and a real blend zone, not a hard edge at the closest body line. We spray a card, confirm the match, then plan the blend so the finished side reads as one continuous panel in direct sun.

How do you measure and align a long wheelbase van after a collision?

You measure the whole vehicle, not the damaged end. A long wheelbase unibody van transmits impact energy along its rails, and a rear corner hit can show up as a datum deviation ahead of the rear axle that nobody would find by looking at the crumpled part.

We set the van on the measuring system and compare rail, datum, centerline and opening points along the full length against factory specification. That data drives the pull sequence, and we re-measure during and after correction so the paperwork shows the van returned to specification rather than merely looking straight.

Dual rear doors on a long body are the last alignment step and the most revealing one. The doors have to meet at the center seal across a tall opening on a body that flexes, so we set hinge height, correct any pulled hinge mounting surface, adjust strikers and confirm both doors latch and seal with the van sitting level and unloaded.

The back corner of my extended van is crushed but it still drives fine. Does it need frame work?
Possibly, and driving fine is not the test. Rear corner impacts on a long body commonly bend the rear crossmember and tweak the rails behind the axle, which changes the rear opening and the door seal long before it changes how the van drives. We measure first and show you the numbers before recommending structural correction.
Why does an extended van cost more to paint than a standard one?
There is simply more surface, and the blend zones are longer. A repair on a nine foot flat side has to be blended across a much larger area to avoid a visible transition, which means more material and more booth time. Body and paint labor is 210 dollars per hour and the estimate spells out the blend panels included.
My rear doors will not line up after a repair somewhere else. Can you fix it?
Yes, and that is a common second opinion call. Doors that will not meet at the center seal usually mean the opening was never brought back to specification, or a hinge mounting surface was pulled and never corrected. We measure the opening, correct the structure, then set the doors. Fixing the doors alone would not hold.
