High Cube Van Box and Body Repair Near Placentia

A high cube van is a cutaway chassis with a separate FRP box bolted to the back, and it fails at the joints between those two things. Low clearance strikes at the leading roof edge, split seams and a torn box to cab gap seal are the calls we get most. All of it is repaired in-shop in Yorba Linda, ten minutes from Placentia.

What does a low clearance strike do to the leading roof edge?

The top front corner of the box is the highest point on the vehicle and it is the first thing a parking garage beam finds. The impact is usually at speed and the damage runs backward from the strike point, opening the seam between the front header and the roof panel.

We inspect the front header, the top rail on both sides, the roof panel bond line and the corner castings or extrusions that tie them together. A strike that only scuffed the exterior skin frequently sheared the bond behind it, and the first rain after the driver says it was nothing brings water down the inside of the front wall.

Repair means removing the damaged skin section, restoring the header and rail structure, re-bonding and mechanically fastening as the body construction requires, then resealing the full seam. We finish with a water test rather than assuming the sealant did its job, because a box that leaks at the front header ruins cargo, not just paint.

Why do FRP box panels delaminate and split at the seams?

Fiberglass reinforced plywood panels are a skin bonded to a core, and the bond is the weak point. Age, flexing over rough pavement, an impact that was never repaired and water that found a seam all separate the skin from the core, and once it starts it spreads along the panel.

You can usually hear it before you see it. A tap along the panel changes tone where the skin has let go, and the surface shows a shallow bulge or a wavy reflection. We map the affected area, cut back to sound bond, replace the panel section and re-seam with the correct sealant and trim rather than caulking a split closed.

Roll-up doors take a beating on delivery routes. Whiting and Todco doors bend panels when a load shifts against them, break hinges and strip the track at the top radius. We repair or replace individual panels, renew hinges, straighten or replace track and reset spring tension so the door lifts without a fight.

The translucent roof panel is worth checking on every visit. It goes brittle and yellow with sun exposure, then cracks around fasteners and leaks straight onto the load. Replacing it is inexpensive relative to the cargo claims it prevents, and it goes in with the same seam sealing discipline as the rest of the roof.

How is the box actually attached to the cutaway chassis?

The box sits on the chassis frame rails through a set of mounting rails, sills and outriggers, usually with U-bolts, brackets or spring loaded mounts that allow a controlled amount of frame twist without transferring it into the box structure.

After any impact or after years of loaded service we check those mounts for elongated holes, cracked outriggers, loose fasteners and a sill that has started to rot or corrode. A box that has shifted even slightly opens the box to cab gap and puts uneven load into the front header, which is often the real cause of a leak nobody could locate.

The box to cab gap seal is the other regular offender. The rubber boot or shield that bridges the gap hardens, tears and stops keeping water out of the cab rear wall and the front of the box. We replace it and verify the gap dimension is correct, since a gap that has closed up means the box moved on its mounts.

I hit a parking garage beam. The box looks scuffed but nothing seems broken. Is it fine?
Usually not. The leading roof edge takes the load into the front header and the top rails, and the bond behind an intact looking skin is frequently sheared. We sound the panel, inspect the header and water test the seam. Catching it now costs far less than replacing a soaked front wall and a load of damaged cargo later.
Can a delaminated FRP panel be repaired, or does the whole side come off?
It depends on how far the separation has spread. A localized area can be cut back to sound bond and sectioned in, which is common and cost effective. Once the delamination runs most of a side, section replacement stops making economic sense and full panel replacement is the honest recommendation. We map it before quoting either one.
Do you service roll-up doors and lift gates on these bodies?
Yes. We repair and replace Whiting and Todco roll-up door panels, hinges, tracks and springs, and we handle lift gate damage on Maxon, Tommy Gate and Waltco units. Lift gate repair typically runs 850 to 4200 dollars. All of it is performed in-shop at the Yorba Linda facility where the bay height and equipment are.
